Divorce in Rochester: Follow these do and don’ts

Let’s start by addressing one key aspect – Your divorce is much more than ending the marriage. It can have emotional, psychological, financial, and social implications. While you may know that there is no hope for reconciliation with your spouse, you must also ensure that you get divorced with dignity and grace. Minnesota is a no-fault divorce state, and you don’t need the permission of your spouse to get divorced. In this post, we are sharing more on the dos and don’ts that you must follow for your divorce.

    The dos

    1. Lawyer up. You need to hire a Rochester divorce attorney for your case. Attorneys know everything about family law and can advise you on your rights and interests. They will also ensure that you don’t settle for less. Divorce lawyers are skilled in mediation and can help resolve key issues.
    2. Plan your finances. Many people don’t think of the financial aspects of the divorce, which could be a huge mistake for the future. You need to work on your finances and ensure that you keep the spending to a minimum. Your divorce is going to cost you money, and before you get your share of marital assets, smart spending is the key.
    3. Get help. Your divorce could be an emotional time, and when you are high on emotions, you shouldn’t be making decisions. If you feel you are disturbed mentally or otherwise, seek help. Therapy is an option for everyone, and there is no harm in accepting the need for professional advice.

    The don’ts

    1. Don’t mess up the kids. You are at war with your spouse probably, but your kids are not at fault. Do not argue or fight in front of the kids and ensure that they don’t see your spouse differently as a parent.
    2. Don’t post on social media. Your divorce is a personal matter, and it is wise to keep things as private as possible. Ensure that you don’t post about your ex on social media and refrain from making comments before others.
    3. Don’t rush into a rebound relationship. It is common to feel lonely after you have initiated the divorce proceedings, but don’t make the mistake of getting into a relationship right away. A rebound only complicates things for you – emotionally and legally, especially if your spouse is someone with ego issues.

Call a lawyer – a DIY divorce is a bad idea because you could make serious mistakes that can impact the outcome.
